What a special time in your life when bringing a child into this world!
As a mother to a young child myself and having experienced both regular massage therapy sessions and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) sessions throughout my pregnancy and after the birth, I am an advocate for the benefits that this work can bring to the experience. I felt calm, confident and comfortable going into the birth, and ended up having a natural delivery. This positive experience has developed a passion in me for helping to provide the same to other expectant mothers.
For babies, treating with craniosacral therapy and bodywork after the birth can help to release any trauma that may have occurred during the journey (vaginal or c-section) and help bring them into an optimal state of health.
Prenatal Massage Therapy
Research shows prenatal massage therapy can help reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health. I use the Earthlite Pregnancy Cushion, which allows women in all stages of pregnancy to be comfortably supported while getting to lay facedown. This cushion also offers a nice inclined support to be on your back as well. A nice treat for those in the later stages of their pregnancy! This setup creates optimal access and ability to help bring relaxation, relief and circulation to sore muscles and tightness caused by the changes happening to your body during this special time.
Pregnancy Massage Benefits include:
-
Alleviating back + leg pain.
-
Reducing labor pain during childbirth.
-
Lessening postoperative pain.
-
Reducing anxiety + stress.
-
Improving mood + lifting depression.
-
Easing insomnia.
Baby Massage & Lessons
Infant massage can have many benefits for babies, including physical, emotional, and social:
-
Physical health
Massage can help babies relax their muscles, which can increase flexibility in their arms and legs. It can also help with digestion, respiration, and circulation, and may help with conditions like gas, colic, constipation, and teething. Massage can also help babies gain weight and grow, and may help preterm infants stimulate growth.
-
Emotional health
Massage can help babies feel calmer and more relaxed, and can reduce stress hormones in both the baby and caregiver. It can also help babies sleep more soundly, and may help with irritability and excessive crying.
-
Social and emotional development
Massage can help babies develop a stronger bond with their parents, and can promote social, emotional, and cognitive development. It can also help babies reach a higher stimulation threshold, and may help them develop motor skills.
*I usually incorporate infant massage techniques with my craniosacral sessions, as I find the combination to be very effective when treating newborns. The fascia in their bodies can become quite tense during the birth experience, and light touch with soothing techniques can really help their little systems to unwind and relax. This lets the nervous system to settle in and allows the craniosacral work to be even more effective for trauma release.
*I believe that every parent should have the skills to do massage with their newborn. Babies benefit hugely from the power of touch, and it is a great way to strengthen the bond between parent and child. This is why I offer lessons for parents and caregivers, so that they can receive in-person, hands-on guidance to learn how to massage their babies with confidence and ease. Lessons are one hour in length and will include techniques for a full body massage, hand-outs and lotion. Group classes are also available upon request.
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy For Mothers and Babies
Pregnancy, birth and early life are profound and formative times. These first moments can determine many aspects of health that condition the rest of our lives. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) offers a powerful understanding of these events and through a unique and deep contact with the human system, can help the expression of the innate life force within each individual. To use these skills effectively can help the development of the embryo, fetus, baby and mother.
During Pregnancy:
BCST keeps your body in peak performance to provide you and your baby with the healthiest gestation and birth experience. It is not only safe but recommended during pregnancy, as it calms the nervous system of both mother and child. A calmer nervous system can strengthen the emotional bonding between you and your child which has the potential of being short-circuited due to pre-natal stresses and trauma. Although the growing fetus is highly conscious, they do not yet know the difference between mother’s thoughts and feelings and its own, so when Mom’s system is soothed and balanced during pregnancy, the baby benefits as well.
BCST can help a woman’s body adjust to the changes created by pregnancy, and can also support the new mother to approach labor with strength, confidence and vitality.
Through a supportive and gentle touch, BCST strengthens
your taxed immune system to soothe or even prevent:
*hypertension *swollen ankles *backache
*heartburn *fatigue *morning sickness
*constipation *anxiety *hormonal changes

Post-Natal Recovery and Breastfeeding:
Your body has a lot of work to do recovering from birth and caring for a newborn. BCST supports C-Section recovery and soothes postpartum depression, post-epidural complications, headaches, vaginal tears, and post-delivery fatigue. BCST can also help you find balance for healthy milk production and an optimized breastfeeding experience.
BCST for Babies:
Working with mothers and babies postnatally can help with recovery from the the rigors of childbirth. Babies respond very well to Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy and it is particularly beneficial to rebalance the whole body system within the first year. BCST is extremely gentle and respectful to the baby, and recognizes that babies are conscious and very aware.
Many babies experience strong compressive forces during birth, which can cause a contraction within their system. This can manifest as shock and trauma, leading to other conditions. If treated at this stage, the birth trauma can be resolved before traumatic holding patterns become set within the physical body.
Birth trauma can lead to a number of conditions experienced by babies and if not corrected, these can lead to significant life long health issues.
*What can you expect during a session:
Younger babies are often treated while being held by a parent. Treatment can be given during breastfeeding or bottle feeding and sometimes, with mobile babies, on the massage table. The practitioner uses their sensitivity to closely observe a baby’s body language, making eye contact and using a refined felt sense and touch to tune into subtle rhythms within the body to facilitate healing. It is non-manipulative, and you are encouraged to respond to your baby. Most babies find it to be relaxing and smile throughout. It is permission based – led by your child.
*After a session: Changes that occur in the body following the treatment tend to take around 48 hours to integrate, some babies may be unsettled during this time. This is normal and will pass. It is also common for the feeling of peace and well being to spill over to the parents during and after the session.
BCST provides gentle, yet effective balancing so your baby is happy and healthy–there is only good that can come out of a treatment!
